Sustainable Real Estate with Chris Antonov

It's a double dose of sustainable real estate! Like Ashley, Chris also interned at Morgan Creek Ventures this summer. However, they worked on different projects. We think it's incredibly awesome that this boutique firm is recruiting so heavily from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder - GO BUFFS!
You worked as a Sustainable Real Estate Development Intern at Morgan Creek Ventures (Boulder, Colorado) this summer and were recently offered an Associate position with the firm (congratulations!). Can you tell us a little bit about Morgan Creek Ventures?

Morgan Creek Ventures (MCV) is a real estate development and consulting company based in Boulder, Colorado. A boutique firm specializing in green building, they are in the business of developing spaces that feature sustainable design, enduring quality, and lasting values. The goal at MCV is to convey how sustainable development, built in accordance with rigorous standards and a focus on design, can improve communities and spaces.

The company’s latest project is the Boulder Commons. This 100,000 square foot property will be the first Net-Zero commercial real estate building in Boulder. Net-Zero entails that a building produces as much energy as it uses.
The Boulder Commons will achieve Net-Zero by placing high-performance solar panels on its roof and on its entire southeast facade as well as by incorporating state of the art climate control and insulation technologies in the building's interior design.
What types of projects did you work on as a Sustainable Real Estate Intern at a boutique real estate development firm?
I developed financial models for their different real estate development projects as well as an overall company financial model. I also worked to streamline the company's internal information management and to improve their weekly work flow.
How did your work help further Morgan Creek Ventures’ commitment to sustainability?
My financial models helped the company's Principal better understand the revenue, cost, and tax implications of using solar panels to power a net-zero commercial building in Boulder. He then used this information to successfully get additional capital from an impact investor and to get building permit approvals from the city of Boulder. My contributions helped make the Boulder Commons, which will set a new standard for green building, a reality.
